About Blood Donation

Saving lives through blood donation connects us all. When you give blood, you’re helping cancer, trauma, and surgery patients in PNW hospitals. Give today.

What’s It Like to Give Blood?

Bloodworks will have you wrapped up in an hour or less, cookie in hand, with the warm feeling that you just gave local patients another shot at life.

AM I ELIGIBLE?

Most people who are in good health, at least 18 years old, and weigh at least 110lbs can donate.

CAN PEOPLE UNDER 18 DONATE?

Live that teenage dream: you can donate in WA at 16 with a parent’s permission. And in Oregon, no permission form needed.

CAN’T YOU MAKE THAT IN A LAB?

You can’t manufacture talent and you can’t manufacture blood: there’s no substitute.

I’M AFRAID OF NEEDLES.

This is #1 on the “Why People Don’t Donate” charts. It takes less than 10 minutes for the actual donation: about the length of 3 great songs.

I HEAR IT HURTS.

There’s a reason why nobody writes songs about blood donation. Love hurts. Blood donation is barely a pinch.

I DON’T EAT MEAT.

Iron is the heavy metal of blood donation. As long as you get enough iron in your vegan/vegetarian diet, you can donate. So veg out and rock on!

I PARTAKE IN LEGAL WEED.

Cannabis users can donate—but like waiting for the beat to drop, you need to save it for after your appointment.

I DON’T HAVE TIME.

It takes just four chords to write a hit song and only one hour to give blood. Simple. Beautiful.

Will my donation make a difference?

Bet. One out of every four Americans will require a blood transfusion in their lifetime. Without your blood donation, a quartet could become a trio.

How often should I donate?

You can donate every 56 days. Get into a rhythm.

I don’t know my blood type.

Like music genres, every blood type is unique. Each is important for a healthy supply. We’ll tell you your blood type when you donate.

I TRAVELED OUTSIDE THE US RECENTLY.

We’re jealous! Most popular travel destinations won’t impact your ability to give blood, and our clinical specialists can set the record straight.

I HAVE TATTOOS OR PIERCINGS.

Tattoos have become mainstream, and most won’t impact your bloodstream. If your body art was done in a licensed shop locally or in one of 40 other approved states, there’s no wait to donate. For everything else, it’s three months.

I HAVE DIABETES.

If your diabetes is under control, on or off medication, you can donate if you meet all other eligibility guidelines.

I’M A MONOGAMOUS GAY OR BISEXUAL MAN.

Come donate. The FDA’s policy has finally changed and that’s music to our ears.

I’M (STILL) NOT ELIGIBLE.

If you can’t give blood for local patients, you can probably donate for research. It’s like buying a record instead of seeing a live show: your contribution could help over and over again.
